Wanna go for a wild ride in the sky?

When sophomore Jill Townsend hears the hottest senior in school, Robbie Magnor, say he thinks a woman who can fly is sexy, she knows what she must do to catch his eye. As she sets out to become a pilot, she unearths a love for flying and finds she belongs up in the breath-taking sky where she not only has an amazing view of the world and its endless possibilities, but there’s nothing holding her back.

But with her mom forbidding anything more dangerous than homework, Jill drums up a clever scheme for lessons. She’s off soaring into the wild blue — until a surprise in the sky foils her plans and threatens her life. Terror at ten thousand feet pales in comparison to the horror waiting on the ground. Now what will Robbie think?

FlyGirl Jill discovers there's only one way out…

About the Author

Syd Blue had her 1st flying lesson on her 14th birthday. What a birthday present! Now she’s a commercial pilot living a life in the skies. She started writing novels in the back of her parent’s Mooney when she was small enough to fit in the baggage compartment. Trips to grandma’s house were even more fun in a plane, especially when she could get the yoke away from her 3 brothers, all of whom are pilots too.

FlyGirl Syd has also written, edited and produced for everything from TV stations to production companies, from book publishers to national magazines. She has had over 40 articles published and screenplays optioned, and supervised writing staffs around the world at magazines and news services. She also produced an award-winning documentary, TV shows, commercials and short films.

As Chief Pilot running an aviation business specializing in aerial surveillance, she sees the expansive view from above throughout the Southwest. Home base is a cabin in the woods with her knight-in-shining-armor husband, gigantic heating bill, and three precious hissing-fire cat-beasts (all of whom hate flying).

In short, Author and Aviatrix sums it up, since about all her writing includes flying.

I have always been an avid reader and absolutely fell in love with this book after the first chapter. This book has a great sense of humor in it (actually laughed out loud) and had me on the edge of my seat about flying 😉 I think it’s perfect for a teen audience but also a great book for the young girl at heart. In so many ways I was able to relate to the book and identify with the main character. Highly recommend picking this one up.

I am usually hard-pressed to give anything a five star rating. When it comes to books, my requirements for the highest rating include, “I would read this book again and again.” FlyGirl satisfies this standard as well as a slew of others. I purchased extra copies to send to the adolescent girl friends in my life- I want them to be inspired, encouraged and unafraid to chase their dreams. Further, FlyGirl is a real page turner! I initially sat down to skim the first few pages and found myself engrossed! HOOKED! I am so thankful for Syd Blue: I needed the messages she sends. FlyGirl will be MY go-to page turner during grad school. I LOVE it and am so INSPIRED. If grad school doesn’t pan out, I will CERTAINLY fly!! Thank you, Syd Blue, for more than just a nice book- Thank you for helping me fulfill my dreams.

Syd Blue’s book “FlyGirl” soars! Roller coaster adventure lets up only long enough for us to fall in love with mpulsive and quick-witted Jill Townsend, a high school sophomore living in the mountainous town of Big Bear, California. When her father dies leaving a grieving, incapacitated mother, Jill dreams of being in the sky while home bound taking care of her young sisters. Syd Blue knows her stuff; her experience as a pilot shines through every exciting minute of flight. I WAS up in the air with Jill, tense from cloud turbulence and gauge fluctuation. Each character shines in this engaging story of a girl who’s not just following a road or path, but looking beyond boundaries to find her true passion, leading to lessons of integrity, trust and believing in herself.

Syd Blue is a talented new writer worth keeping an eye on. Her writing style is highly engaging and she really knows how to tell a great story. But Fly Girl is more than an entertaining read – it is a book that celebrates the qualities that are so worth promoting in young women – confidence, guts and intelligence. With teenage girls being bombarded with media that objectifies women and teaches them to only value their looks, we need more books like Fly Girl. The main character, Jill Townsend, is a role-model worth looking up to – like Catniss in Hunger Games, but set in the modern world that our teens can relate to.
Fly Girl is a fun read, loaded with facts about flying. Its also has a lot of detail about the local area (the author’s home) – set in Big Bear Lake, in the mountains of Southern California. It’s would be enjoyable for teens and adults, and especially anyone interested in flying. While the main character is a female, the story and themes are universal enough for the book to also appeal to boys.
    Highly recommended read!

Fly Girl is a page turner for the young as well as the not so young anymore!
I love to read and it makes me happy when I find a well written book the kind where you are almost sad when it ends!
I have read a lot of my teenage daughters books and was just so pleased to find a book that I can give to any kid and feel good about it!! A book that actually has a girl with a goal that is not concerned with the perfect outfit! How many times will we have the opportunity to find a pilot who can actually write without boring us to death with technical details, Fly Girl has the perfect mixture of adventure, a little romance, life’s daily difficulties and information to become interested in flying and wanting to go after our dreams!

I found myself riveted after the first chapter! Jill is one of my favorite characters ever: she is strong, capable and highly ambitious but has the normal everyday type of faults and makes the sort of mistakes in life others like me relate to. I was literally cheering out loud for her to succeed in her dream of flying. I have already referred this book to many others, both pilots and non. Great from start to end, very good and even made me cry a little. From happiness or sadness? Read this awesome book and find out yourself!

The author, Syd Blue has a beautiful gift of words that allows me, the reader, to really feel the wind beneath my wings. A reminder to us all, no matter your age, that the joy of the journey can be found in following your heart’s desire. I loved the story and can’t wait to share it with my niece’s and for more books from this exciting author.

I became the hero when I bought FlyGirl for my niece. She absolutely loved it. She’s sharing the book with all her girlfriends as well. I’ve heard through the niece-grapevine, that her friends love the book as well and one of her friends is now thinking of becoming a pilot. A great story that shows you can do anything you want to if you set your mind to it.

This is awesome! I love, love, love it. Seriously. Syd Blue has done such an impressive job with telling the story. Readers will feel like they are flying the plane alongside the characters and living the ups and downs of life in Jill’s world. The story line is so well-paced too!

We are reading FlyGirl by Syd Blue as part of our 7th grade curriculum in English this year. A terrific story about a girl who reaches for the stars to achieve her dreams, with a few foibles along the way. Any young person can relate to Jill and what she must do in pursuit of her goals!

I love the voice of teenaged Jill who wants to learn to fly so badly that she will forge her mother’s signature and get into a lot of trouble to get up in the air. The reader will fear for Jill and think she’s heading down the wrong path, but then Jill will do something magnanimous and be vindicated so that you’ll root for her and also want her to achieve her dream. Blue, who took her first flying lesson at 14, describes Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains of California with its small local airport accurately, and we can experience what it must be like to fly over the nearby communities (Landers and Lucerne Valley) as well. Even adults may want to take a flying lesson after reading. High school and junior high school teachers will welcome a book about ambitious girls in the science and arts (Jill’s friend). In fact, there’s a “quick quiz” at the end about flight. Now exactly how will Jill who gets “grounded” get to the prom in a plane with one of the handsomest boys in school?

I loved this book! “Fly Girl” inspires young girls and women to learn to fly. As a woman pilot, I believe there is nothing on this earth that empowers women more than learning to fly. The freedom, the feeling of accomplishing something that few people can do – is ego boosting and gives girls and women the confidence to achieve whatever they want to do. Kudos to Syd Blue!
